Gauze is the quiet worker of the second drawer. This roll is four inches wide and a little over four yards long, so it can cover a scraped forearm or a knee in a single, even layer, then keep going if you need a second. It is soft, absorbent and made not to cling to the wound, which makes changing it far less of an ordeal for the person on the receiving end.

Twenty rolls come individually wrapped, alongside four rolls of medical tape. Cut a length with scissors, lay it over a pad or an ointment, and tape the end down. The material is cotton with a little stretch, so it hugs the limb gently and changes without leaving lint behind. Keep a few in the first-aid kit, a few in the car and the rest in the drawer.
